BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Dr. Aileen M. Marty is a physician - scientist , clinician, and anatomic/clinical pathologist whose career spans over 45 years of research, diagnostic innovation, and translational leadership at the intersection of infectious disease pathology, outbreak response, and public health. Her research began in 1976 with work on vision studies in the lemon shark ( Negaprion brevirostris ) and encompasses many sizeable clinical investigations and pathological research studies involving a wide span of pathogens, from viruses to helminths - including emerging pathogens and pathogens associated with biological terrorism. Of note are her work on viruses (e.g., dengue, Zika, and Mpox), ehrlichiosis (e.g., Ehrlichia chaffeensis ) , and the interactions between helminthic infections and drug interactions (e.g. , Onchocerciasis and Ivermectin studies), clinic -pathological studies on the health impact of vaccines (Venezuela Encephalitis virus) on humans and rodents, epidemiological and laboratory studies on disease (leprosy in humans and non- human primates), and heavy contributions to studies on the pathogenesis of Ebola virus on humans and non- human primates, disease surveillance, and the public health impact of disease including legal, medical, and sociological factors. Overall, her research is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach that includes clinical practice, pathology, epidemiology, economic impacts, and public health policy, emphasizing the diagnosis, prevention, and management of infe ctious and immunological diseases within diverse populations.

Dr. Marty joined the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in 1987 and served as Chief of Infectious Disease Pathology from 1991 to 1999. At the AFIP, she oversaw diagnostic protocols for complex surgical and autopsy cases and contributed to the standardization of histopathological criteria for emerging pathogens.

During the COVID - 19 pandemic, Dr. Marty served as Laboratory Director of FIU’s High Complexity CLIA Lab. S he established the High - Complexity CLIA Lab and as the Lab Director, she worked with her team to procure the instrumentation, personnel, training, plans, and reagents, develop the standard operating procedures, and successfully obtained CLIA approval. She also validated rt-PCR assays for SARS - CoV - 2 detection while maintaining 99.8% diagnostic accuracy across 145,000 tests. The lab also allowed Dr. Marty and her team to do research, such as her 2023 research on long COVID pathology and her recognition of persistent viral RNA fragments in gut - associated lymphoid tissue can serve as viral reservoir persistence.

She has served as a College of American Pathology (CAP) - certified laboratory inspector (#181554). Dr. Marty has shaped global diagnostic standards through WHO consultations on molecular test validation for emerging pathogens. Her 2022 work on monkeypox virus detection in proctitis specimens established novel PCR protocols now adopted by 14 national reference laboratories. Recent peer - reviewed studies (2023 - 2024)

in Critical Care Medicine and Vaccines highlight her ongoing contributions to vaccine immunopathology, including the characterization of hybrid immunity in immunosuppressed patients through multiplex serological assays.

In addition to pathology, Dr. Marty has continued to practice clinical medicine, mainly tropical medicine, in many nations of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. She was one of 8 individuals on the Blue - Ribbon Panel that created the Military Tropical Medicine course. The Tropical Medicine program she helped devise included multiple annual “MedReady” operations worldwide. These operations involve Dr. Marty and other physicians providing comprehensive Tropical Medicine care to Low -and-middle- income nations. She and her teams organize and deliver care on ships and at land - based -rapidly- developed medical sites to hundreds of patients per day. These missions accomplished three critical US goals (1) generating friendship, partnership, and solidarity with the USA, (2) training physicians in tropical medicine, and (3) obtaining “ground truth” regarding the epidemiology of infectious diseases per region. Dr Marty continues to contribute to military tropical medicine education and training and as an attending physician with the FIU - FAST team as part of the U.S. Southern Command’s Enduring Promise initiative. The work provides training to local medical providers on Tropical and emerging infectious diseases, from both a syndromic approach, such as diarrheal diseases and rashes, and from disease - specific training, particularly those involving entities that threaten to produce severe outbreaks such as viral hemorrhagic fevers, malaria, and Zika virus. Dr. Marty is also trained as a foreign animal disease diagnostician, and she applies her understanding of animal health to human health , thereby providing an integrated One Health approach to medicine. Dr. Marty's "One Health" approach integrates veterinary, human, and medicine. This is exemplified by her 2021 zoonotic transmission studies of SARS - CoV - 2, which help identify unique spike protein mutations through next - generation sequencing. This translational paradigm informs her current research on arbovirus evolution, combining digital pathology with machine learning to predict spillover risks. Dr. Marty is an Edi tor-in- Chief for Elsevier’s One Health Journal.

Dr. Marty has served on multiple national, regional, and international boards , helping the World Health Organization with Mass Gathering Medicine and with the Health Security Interface, working for the United Nations as a Weapons inspector, and working at the White House for the National Security Council and as a Presidential Advisor. She has a broad grasp of medical issues from both a practitioner and a policymaker. During the COVID - 19 pandemic, she treated countless COVID - 19 patients. She helped the county, the state, and the nation in dealing with the COVID - 19 pandemic, providing counseling for the mayor, the courts, the schools, the jails, and businesses to help them navigate best practices. She is sought after by local, national, and international media to discuss and explain medicine and science developments and provides expert and thoughtful information and concepts for strategic planning.
